Dive report for Brixham Breakwater 22nd October 2005
What a day, after all that stormy stuff and the Lyme Bay trip being cancelled, we just thought we would venture down to Brixham just for the ride if nothing else, on the off chance that we might be able to dive. Good old Brixham, hardly ever lets you down, flat sea, sunny day, hardly a breeze (in more ways than one). To acquaint you with the members of todays dive I give you,
Brian Marsh,
Kim Marsh,
Alexander Caminada,
Fred Promnitz (Chappie),
Bev Promnitz,
Tony Feist (BABE),
Chris Sly,
David Sly,
John Fowler,
Simon Ellis,
Martin, Jo and Oliver Knapman
Others in attendance:
Caroline Marsh (who did a stalwart job in charge of the dive log),
Mrs BABE and little BABE,
Mrs Fowler,
The rest of the Knapman Kids??!!
We got to Brixham bang on 8.30am and set up camp in the usual spot at the top of the beach. Dive briefing was completed by 9am and the first divers were in the water by 9.50am. Everyone having dived twice and being out of the water by 2.35pm meant were in the pub by 3.30pm.
The vis was lowish at the start, most of us enjoying approximately 2-3 metres in places but getting slightly better throughout the day until just after lunch when it improved to about 4 metres. Varying skill levels meant lots of varied training and some very commendable dives. Quite a lot to see on the day with various reports of cuttlefish, pipefish, crabs, slugs, anemones etc.
The days highlight was the inaugural outing for the AIRY FAIRY and the 2nd outing for THE PIG!!!??? The AIRY Fairy was Brian’s brainchild, to replace the prize for the person who consumed the least amount of air. There was the trophy, of which the lucky winner gets to keep until the next time the competition is organised, and a fetching pair of black wings to wear in the pub afterwards. What a coincidence that it was won by Brian with an equivalent surface air consumption of 13.1l/min. He looked a picture going to the bar with the wings on, and he wears them so well, maybe a closet fairy????
The 2nd outing for the PIG found him or her changing homes from the Feist household to the Promnitz residence, with Chappie being an odds on contender, but no again he just missed out on this, being pipped at the post by his wife Bev with a consumption of 39.5l/min. We will print a leaderboard and maybe have an annual award for both categories.
John Fowler won the money from the guesser being only 20bars away from the total used by all divers in attendance, which was 2520bars.
I would like to thank all those attending today to make it the success that it was.
Looking forward to the next one.
