The table below will give you an idea of the resolutions required
for a print.
I've based the calculations on a 200dpi image since this will
give a defined and sharp print. It is possible to print at lower
resolution (150dpi) but pixellation will
become aparent.

As you may have already worked out, the calculation is pretty
simple. Decide on the print size (6 x 4) then decide on resolution
(200dpi) then simply multiply each side of the print times the
resolution (6 x 200 = 1200, 4 x 200 = 800) to get your dimensions
in pixels. Multiply the pixel dimensions (1200 x 800) to get your
required camera resolution (960000 or .96 megapixel or simply rounded
off to 1 megapixe).
